Claudia Emerson reads from her new collection, “Late Wife”

Associate Professor of English Claudia Emerson teaches creative writing at the University of Mary Washington. Her poetry has appeared in Poetry, The Southern Review, Shenandoah, TriQuarterly, Crazyhorse, New England Review, and others. Her two earlier books, Pharaoh, Pharaoh (1997) and Pinion: an Elegy (2002), were published as part of Louisiana State University Press’s signature series, Southern Messenger Poets, edited by Dave Smith. Emerson’s Late Wife (2005) is also part of the series.

In 2005, Professor Emerson was chosen by U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser as one of two Witter Bynner Fellows in Poetry for that year. She has earned three Pulitzer Prize nominations, and in 2003 was named Outstanding Young Faculty Member at the University of Mary Washington.

This reading took place September 27, 2005, in Combs Hall on the Fredericksburg campus. Professor Emerson is introduced by Dr. Mara Scanlon, Associate Professor of English at UMW.
